What is a wall plate?
Wall plates, also known as cover plates or faceplates, are flat panels that cover and protect electrical outlets, switches, and other wall-mounted devices. They are the final touch that completes your electrical installation, ensuring that everything looks polished and professional. Wall plates come in a variety of materials and finishes so that you can match them perfectly with your decor. Not only do they add a touch of style, but they also keep the electrical components protected and out of sight.
What is the purpose of a wall plate?
Wall plates protect the inner workings of your outlets and switch from dust, dirt, and accidental contact, which can help prevent electrical shocks and short circuits. They also serve an aesthetic purpose, hiding any rough edges and unsightly wiring to give your room a clean, finished look.
How do you remove old powerpoint cover plates?
If you’re ready to give your space a fresh look, removing old powerpoint covers is a straightforward task:
- Turn Off the Power: Safety first! Make sure to turn off the power at the circuit breaker before you begin.
- Unscrew the Plate: Grab a screwdriver and remove the screws holding the cover plate in place. Keep the screws—you’ll need them for the new plate.
- Gently Pry Off the Plate: Carefully pull the cover plate away from the wall. If it’s a bit stubborn, you can gently use a flathead screwdriver to pry it off without damaging the wall.
How do you install an electrical wall plate?
Installing new powerpoint covers and wall plates is just as simple as removing the old ones:
- Position the Plate: Align the new wall plate over the outlet or switch, making sure the screw holes line up with those in the electrical box.
- Insert the Screws: Place the screws through the holes in the plate and into the box. Tighten them gently with a screwdriver—be careful not to overtighten, as this can crack the plate.
- Turn the Power Back On: Once everything is secure, turn the power back on at the circuit breaker. Double-check that the outlet or switch works correctly.
